7-Year-Old Girl Riding In School Van Killed In Crash Near Trinity
TRINITY, TX – The accident that occurred on FM 1893 in Trinity County left a 7-year-old girl dead. The 2015 Chevrolet Trinity ISD van in which she was travelling was on the way to school.
The daughter of a Trinity County Sheriff’s deputy, Journey Magness, sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident and was rushed to East Texas Medical Center (ETMC) in Trinity where she succumbed to her injuries.
5 kids sustained minor injuries for which they were rushed to ETMC. All the kids riding in the van were provided protection when the accident happened.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said the Chevrolet Trinity ISD van was going eastbound around 7:30 a.m. there were 8 kids riding in it. When it stopped to pick up a kid, a 2008 Ford pick-up hit the van from behind in which 4 individuals were seated, including the driver.
The individuals riding in the Ford were rushed to ETMC by private vehicle as a precaution.
55-year-old Chandra Wheeler from Trinity was behind the wheel of the van and 17-year-old Micah Brock was behind the wheel of the ford. The female driver didn’t sustain any injury in the accident as shown by the report.
No other individual was involved in the crash and no other individual was reported injured. The roadway was blocked for traffic.
The father of the pickup driver said about her that Micah had no mobile phone with her and wasn’t adjusting the radio, but the sun was blinding her. He added, “Everybody who drives on that road knows that. If a kid is on the road, if a cow is on the road, you’re driving hoping nothing is there. That doesn’t take away from the pain the (child’s) family is suffering.”
A fund has been set up for the family, the accident is under investigation.
